Water-friendly garden

In the Netherlands, climate change is causing heavier rainfall as well as longer periods of drought and hot weather. After a heavy shower water is not able to permeate the soil well which can lead to significant flooding problems in completely tiled gardens. Private gardens can play an important role in reducing flooding and the heat stress this can cause. Maxeda DIY Group responds to this issue by giving attention in its stores and website to the solutions that exist for combating these problems. Solutions include a sedum roof, advice on suitable plants for wet and dry gardens, collecting rainwater by installing a rain barrel and drainage channels.

In 2019, various store initiatives were carried out at Praxis with this in mind. In the Tegel eruit, plant erin (Tile out, plant in) promotion, a customer handing in a tile at certain Praxis stores on 20 April 2019 received a garden plant to take home. Information sessions were organised by professional gardeners who would give customers advice on making their gardens water friendly. There were also special deals for rain barrels in municipalities that had made subsidies available for this.
